Baby, Baby, you’re the world to me.

by statia on March 5, 2008

Every parent says the same thing about their child on their birthday: “I can’t believe they’re [insert age here] year(s) old.” A certain disbelief of the rate at which time seems to fly by, especially when you have kids. The Mini is of course, amazing. As his mother, maybe I’m a tiny bit biased.

I couldn’t really tell you what we did on the day before he was born. I believe we went out for breakfast in the morning, lamenting that this was our last day without a child. It was kind of surreal to think about. It’s kind of surreal to think about now. No matter what anyone tells you, the only way to fully understand what it’s like to be a parent is to have someone hand you a baby (preferably one that is or will be yours) and tell you to care for it. Books and people can only prepare you so much, and I find that both are truly too assvicey. When people ask me: “is it hard?” Yep, absolutely hands down the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Even if you have the patience of a saint, it still wears you thin, and sometimes makes you want to drive into oncoming traffic.

While it’s hard, it’s also the best thing that has ever happened to me… to us. If we never have anymore, I will not regret it. We’ve been truly been given a gift and I would only hope that I am a better person for being his mother.

I’ve had a really hard time with him turning one. I’ve worn it on my sleeve. I’ve gotten shit for it. My dead German heart has cried about it. It’s a cause for celebration, yes, we’ve survived the first year, but no one gets that time back and the chances of us ever having another are incredibly slim. It’s gone by too fast, and I want a do over. He’s become a little person, which is amazing to watch, and so affectionate. He’s a total Mama’s boy through and through, and if he knows I’m within hearing distance and he should trip, he will cry, even fake cry, just to get me to come to him and give him a hug. If I said that I didn’t love that, I would be lying.

People say you can’t imagine your life before them. Whether this is as a result of your memory being shot to hell due to sleep deprivation, or because they round out your family so well, it’s true. I don’t really remember a whole lot from before he was born.

I don’t really want to.

Happy first birthday, baby.

I know exactly what you mean. I have had some of the absolute worst days of my life in the past 15 months. I’ve also had way more of the best days too. Either way, I’d never go back to life without her. I’m glad we had our time together before becoming parents but this is our family now and I love it.

My, aren’t we just Mary Fucking Poppins?

Happy Birthday, Mini!

So I have this urge to be mushy but since your German facade seems to have crumbled, I’m going to go with snottysnark instead: TOLDJA SO!!

(Okay, so it was the happiest “toldja so” I’ve doled out in a while, but still. I knew the Universe couldn’t go denying you a sprog forever.)

Bittersweet isn’t it?

And you will never stop marveling over the whole thing.

It has been 17 years now with the twins and still not a day goes by and I pause and think about it…

I loved that picture. LIFE!

Thank you for sharing such a wonderful post.

Deltus March 9, 2008 at 10:09 pm

Congrats to the wee man! And you two parents, as well. Totally understand the “hard to remember life before the kid” thing.

robyn March 10, 2008 at 3:59 pm

I’m sorry I’m late — I spent part of last week on mandatory bedrest. (I celebrated his birthday in the ER.) But I just wanted to wish him an amazingly happy, albeit belated, first birthday and congrats to the two of you on such a huge milestone. The best is yet to come!
