It’s like having a second birthday

by statia on May 13, 2007

Today is my first Mother’s day. I feel like a fake. Like, I really shouldn’t be celebrating this day that I ignored for so many years. Like I didn’t really carry my son around, uncomfortably for nine (ten) months. Despite my husband saying I have the “Mama touch”, I still don’t really feel like a Mother. I suppose that it brings mixed feelings. For years this day stung. All the reminders for a month before. And now all of a sudden this year, it kind of snuck up on me. “Oh yeah, I’m a mom now too, weird.”

But it’s here and so far, this is what I’ve gotten:

A boy who slept from about 9:30 until 4am (!)
A husband who stayed up with him, so I could sleep
A husband who made me quiche and fresh fruit for breakfast.
Spit up in my hair. (The mini’s way of saying, Happy Mother’s Day, Mama).
A boy who NAPPED for over an hour. Soundly.
A boy who is now on an official feeding schedule.

But mostly, a boy. It’s something that after years of heartache, I’m eternally grateful for.

Happy Mother’s day to the Mother’s and Happy Mother’s day to those who I know will someday become Mothers, even if they have their doubts. And happy Sunday to everyone else.

Happy Mother’s Day to you. I hope you had a good day. It sounded like you got off to a good start–yummy breakfast. Don’t be hard on yourself. You have a beautiful son and a loving husband. Enjoy being a first time mom.

Happy, happy, happy Mother’s Day to you!! I’m so glad I finally get to say that to you instead of all the things you didn’t want to hear (“I know you’ll have a baby someday–I just know”) and were afraid to believe.

Happy Mother’s Day! You are a Mama!! I’m so happy for you and I send all three of you my love love love!

Remember when I would tell you that last paragraph and you would roll your eyes at me (hey, don’t think I couldn’t see that via e-mail)… Well welcome to the Hallmark recipient list. I love you and I seriously could NOT be happier for you and your FAMILY! Happy Mother’s Day!

Well said! Happy Mother’s Day right back atcha. (And I am so SO envious that your boy slept (sleeps?) so well. I *still* am getting up with my boy once or twice a night.) Hope you had a truly great day.

jesser May 14, 2007 at 12:29 pm

Yay! You really earned this mama’s day. Hope you enjoyed the hell out of it.

Sounds like you had a brilliant mother’s day – many congratulations!

Slowly stretching out the nightime sleep hours is what I’m living for right now… we can get our 9 week old to sleep roughly between 9:00 and 3:00 at the moment… and I do mean ‘roughly’!

Here’s to improvement at 3 months!

Dude, your revised “About Me” page made me well up in a totally non-German way.

I’m just saying.

You are the non-relation person that I am most happiest for on Mother’s Day.
