The secret word is…..

by statia on August 20, 2004

The sales buzzword for yesterday was:

circle back.

There are two really cheesy salespeople in my office, and both of them used the word circle back.

“Hi yeah, this is George, we spoke the other day and I just wanted to circle back with you……”

It’s right up there with “what can I do to get you into this car today?”

ETA: I won’t be around this weekend seeing as the meester is taking me away somewhere. You kids be good and I’ll circle back with you either late Sunday or maybe Monday.

“Hi…Buddha here. Remember me the stout Hawaiaan guy. Yeah..I just wanted to circle back and just see if I can put in the order for 1,0000 widgets…yeah..that’d be great..”

circle “back”. whew, at a brief glance, it looked like circle “jerk”, which would entirely be inappropriate.

hee. I like that. Here where I work, it’s ‘moving forward’.

“Moving forward, I plan to use the phrase ‘circle back’ at least twice a day.”

sarah August 20, 2004 at 12:37 pm

Gawd, that’s a terrible phrase…have they not heard of the phrase “follow up”? That’s the correct business term to use in those circumstances…the only correct term…do I need to go to you company and give them business lessons?

Have a great weekend, have a great bday…:)

It looks like I came by at the right time – happy birthday! Now what I was originally going to say – my least favourite expression at the moment is to ‘give someone the skinny’, meaning to summarise (eg Bob phoned and gave me the skinny on yesterday’s meeting). There are just too many wanky phrases in my workplace.

martha August 21, 2004 at 7:21 am

i had a roommate in college who used 24/7 every other sentence. Now that is a phrase that can be useful but not in EVERY fricking sentence. Perhaps I should circle back and find her to see if she still does it. (circle back would drive me nuts too.)

Happy birthday!

My boss has a phrase of the month… my favorite: “we have to gain some efficiencies in our processes”
