I’d like to have an argument please.

by statia on February 20, 2003

I really have to say, that Monty Python is completely lost on me. I’d chalk it up to it being British humor, but I love The Young Ones. I don’t find the majority of Monty Python funny at all.

tj February 20, 2003 at 9:48 am

you’re lucky you ain’t in smacking distance, ’cause i’ve got a halibut here with your name on it.

Nikki February 20, 2003 at 9:48 am

I totally hear you. I don’t get the Monty Python stuff either. If you get BBC America where you are there is a show called So Graham Norton, he is SOOOO hysterical, it’s a British talk show. It’s on weeknights @ 11pm & 11:30pm. I also loved Ab Fab (Absolutely Fabulous), but other than those two I really don’t care for most British comedy.

trish February 20, 2003 at 10:04 am

You have issues.

dasheekeejones February 20, 2003 at 10:12 am

you’re high.

mike krempasky February 20, 2003 at 10:27 am

Oh, man…the Young Ones…I laughed like an idiot when Neil nailed his legs to the table.

yvonne February 20, 2003 at 10:53 am

damn, i wish i knew who monty python was because i feel like arguing this morning…

SpunkyTheMonkey February 20, 2003 at 11:13 am

monty python is cult. that is all.

btezra February 20, 2003 at 11:18 am

Not a Monty Python fan at all…mmmmm. It can be teh accent of the dry wit/sarcasm that the Brits use that turns you off…

Jules February 20, 2003 at 11:43 am

oh god, I hate me some Monty Python.

why do people have to recite the dialog while they are watching any MP film??

if you want to argue… Krispy Kreme donuts are fucking overrated. Or… german sheppards are the bestest breed of dog. ever. :)

nastybastard February 20, 2003 at 11:48 am

you’re just mad because you have a dead parrot.

tj February 20, 2003 at 11:51 am

oh my god … i … i … you people … arrrgh. monty python is so damn hilarious. it’s the dry wit that MAKES it funny. i guess some people just have to have slapstick to be funny … oh wait, they have that too. what’s NOT to like? they make fun of people, they have slapstick, they have sarcasm. that there is the formula for funny my friends.

besides, who can argue that john cleese, eric idle and michael palin aren’t still funny mofos in their own right? and i KNOW nobody can tell me terry gilliam (http://us.imdb.com/Name?Gilliam,%20Terry) isn’t one of the best directors in the world.

jennypoo February 20, 2003 at 11:53 am

I think Monty Python is a guy thing. The movies? Yeah, I don’t get it. What is so funny about a guy with 2 coconuts clapping them together behind a guy who is pretending to ride a horse.

BUT the dead parrot sketch-fuckin hilariass!

goober February 20, 2003 at 12:34 pm

Are you on crack, girlfriend?

GeekGrrl February 20, 2003 at 1:41 pm

See, I love Monty Python. I like The Young Ones. Chef? Excellent. But Ab Fab? I couldn’t STAND it. Ugh. I HATED that freakin’ show. Blech blech blech. Two hags with ciggies hangin’ out their traps whining and drinking. Horrid.

gojou February 20, 2003 at 2:51 pm

Ultimate MP test: Rent “…And Now For Something Completely Different.” Fast forward to the final skit, “Twit of the Year.” Watch.

If you can watch this and not piss your pants laughing, you have no soul.

gojou February 20, 2003 at 2:52 pm

P.S. “The Argument Clinic” rocks, too. Better listened to than watched, though.

Evil Monkey February 20, 2003 at 3:04 pm

Heretic. Bloody heresy. Oh well, we will forgive you this time. We won’t sick the Knights who say NI! on you. Perhaps the Black Knight, or a holy hand grenade. You mean to tell me that you didn’t even like Mister Creosote from the Meaning of Life? *sighs* Oh well. Btw, how is Gromit holding up today?

Cyberangel February 20, 2003 at 3:05 pm

I like MP, but can’t stand the 3 stooges. ugh!

Nikki February 20, 2003 at 3:52 pm

geekgrrl….I am NOT a smoker, but just the whole thing is so blown out of proportion. And they are soooo completely selfish…watching it allows you to see what you’d be like if you only cared about yourself heheheee. My ex LOOOOVED Benny Hill, which I was so-so on, but I do think that Benny Hill was funnier than Monty Python.

PS Krispy Kreme donuts are highly overrated. Just because you can get your instant diabetic shock WARM doesn’t make it better LOL

Nicole February 20, 2003 at 4:19 pm

We’ll have to have a little bit ‘o Monty along with the Grease 2….How can you not think “Every Sperm is Sacred” is hee-larious? And, dude, bring out your dead! Bwah! That’s good stuff!

Stephanie February 20, 2003 at 5:19 pm

Are you SURE we’re related?

Solonor February 20, 2003 at 5:19 pm

I fart in your general direction.

noinsight February 20, 2003 at 5:53 pm

A lot of it is now a bit dated. However the merchant banker sketch is amazing.
“It’s for the orphans?”

whistler February 20, 2003 at 6:05 pm

and now for something completely different.

tj February 20, 2003 at 6:57 pm

An argument isn’t just contradiction. An argument is a connected series of statements intended to establish a proposition. An argument is an intellectual process. Contradiction is just the automatic gainsaying of any statement the other person makes.

munin February 20, 2003 at 8:01 pm

ok, I’ll admit to liking parts of Monty Python, I’ll admit that I have seen holy Grail a few times and can quote some of the parts, and yes occasionally I do get a chuckle or two out of Flying circus. But, if you asked me what british comedy I enjoy, Monty Python would be quite low on my list. I think I have a greater appreciation for, Black Adder, and Faulty Towers, ooh and anything by Nick Park! That being said, could someone please tell me what ‘The Young Ones’ is all about?!? hanks. ;o)

Meredith February 20, 2003 at 9:02 pm

Ok, I’m way late on this one, but I freaking LOVE The Young Ones. That’s all.

Joelle February 20, 2003 at 10:11 pm

Don’t feel badly, dumplin’. I don’t get it either. :)

jen February 20, 2003 at 11:01 pm

run away, RUN AWAY!!!!!!!!!

i do love monty python, too. i admit it. but, i love dry, sick, twisted humor…and i loved Benny Hill, even. yeah, i know…slay me now. benny hill…

hmw February 20, 2003 at 11:40 pm

Nah….I’m not a big Monty Python fan either. There are a few cute skits that I laugh hysterically at, but for the most part….eh. But! I think John Cleese is a total trip – things are just funnier when he does them….we have all of the Fawlty Towers episodes and I could just watch them forever and laugh at every single one.

I guess it’s proabably just the whole variety show idea that I can’t deal with. Like Saturday Night Live – am I the only one that finds the majority of those skits just plain stupid and often revolting? I like the early days with Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, Jim Belushi, etc….but now…..no.

That right there will start a whole new argument ;-)

Cyberangel February 21, 2003 at 1:50 am

It took a while for MP to grow on me. Now my girlfriend & I go back & forth w/the bring out your dead lines.

John Cleese is the best. “I shall be forced to taunt you a second time!”

Jimnice February 21, 2003 at 11:34 am

With all of their films and shows, there has to be something that you think is funny. Their opus is so tremendous. I can’t believe that there isn’t something you find funny.

The Greece vs. Germany Philosophical Football Match, funny walks, wafer-thin mints. Brilliant.

ste February 21, 2003 at 12:35 pm

*gasp* *double gasp* *blink* *swoon* I … can’t deal with this right now. ;)

Jenni February 21, 2003 at 12:55 pm

You no likey Monty Python?! Well then, I fart in your general direction! Teehee!

Swami February 21, 2003 at 2:10 pm

It was funny thirty-plus years ago. Come on. Now it’s just nostalgia.

btezra February 21, 2003 at 4:24 pm

wow, that’s a ton of speil for a blip about Monty Python…

LisaC February 23, 2003 at 9:30 pm

Always look on the bright side of life! :)

Tina February 24, 2003 at 8:09 am

I hate Monty Python! I used to work at Radio Shack “Cool Things” (nevermind that)and all we did all day was watch movies…Everyone loved Monty Python… It’s stupid to me… Just like the Scary Movies and Don’t Be a Menace…Now Rush Hour and all the Fridays are comedy.. You remedial. haha j/k

BeerMary February 24, 2003 at 8:39 am

I thought MP was funny when I was in 5th grade. Now, it has moments, but not enough to get me to watch.

I however own every episode of the Young Ones available on VHS in the US.

“Open up, it’s the pigs!”
